Anthropic Opens Claude Mythos to Vetted Biology Labs

Anthropic has introduced the Life Sciences Verification Program (LSVP) in beta, allowing approved biology organizations to use its powerful Claude Mythos, Opus, and Sonnet models. Previously, automated safety classifiers would often flag legitimate scientific prompts regarding pathogen research or drug discovery, routing those requests to the less capable Claude Opus model. The LSVP creates a formal pathway to bypass these workflow disruptions, giving researchers uninterrupted access to advanced systems like Mythos 5 and Mythos 5.1.

The program features two distinct grant tiers. Standard Use grants are designed for everyday team research, while High-risk Use grants target narrowly defined, single-project studies with a six-month renewal cycle. While high-risk access to Opus 5 and Sonnet 5 is available immediately, high-risk access to Mythos remains restricted to a small group of highly vetted organizations as Anthropic coordinates with the U.S. government.

To maintain safety, Anthropic is shifting from real-time prompt blocking to offline, multi-session monitoring. The company retains traffic data for 30 days to analyze behavioral patterns, though this data is compartmentalized, excluded from model training, and kept away from Anthropic's own life sciences teams. Early adopters of the program include Edison Scientific, Xaira Therapeutics, and Manifold Bio. Anthropic expects to enroll hundreds of organizations in the first week.

For practitioners, Anthropic claims a Mythos 5-based drug-design workflow can accelerate certain tasks by "roughly tenfold," matching or exceeding skilled human operators in selecting binding sites and running protein-design tools. However, the beta is currently restricted. It is available via the API console, Claude for Enterprise, and Team plans, but excludes individual Pro or Max accounts. Furthermore, AWS Bedrock and Google Cloud do not support the program at launch, and organizations operating under a Business Associate Agreement cannot participate due to regulated health data restrictions.
