Apple has entered into a reverse acqui-hire agreement with personalized audio startup Huxe, according to official regulatory disclosures. Filings submitted to the European Commission confirm that the iPhone maker reached an agreement to offer employment to select Huxe AI staff while obtaining a non-exclusive license for the startup's intellectual property. Apple formally submitted notification of the deal to European regulators on June 9, following an initial report by MacRumors.

Huxe was originally founded by developers who worked on the synthetic audio features within Google's NotebookLM, a tool that was recently renamed Gemini Notebook. However, the personalized podcast startup unexpectedly announced on May 21 that it would cease operations entirely. As part of its shutdown, Huxe removed its software from both the Apple App Store and Google Play, discontinued ongoing services, and deleted all existing user data.

The transaction comes amid intensifying competition in the generative audio space. Huxe's decision to close arrived just one day after rival streaming platform Spotify debuted its own suite of AI-powered podcast creation tools. The intellectual property and engineering expertise acquired through the arrangement could allow Apple to introduce automated, personalized speech tools to its own Podcasts application.

The arrangement highlights how large tech companies are using non-traditional structures to expand their artificial intelligence teams. By obtaining non-exclusive intellectual property rights and making targeted job offers rather than buying the startup outright, companies can acquire critical domain expertise while minimizing the regulatory and antitrust scrutiny typically triggered by full acquisitions.
