Developer Thariq Shihipar has released ai-newtab, an open-source TypeScript project that uses Anthropic's Claude to automatically rebuild a user's Chrome new-tab page each morning. The project analyzes recent browser activity to generate customized HTML and JavaScript artifacts, displaying dynamic elements like research paper lists, market updates, and frequently visited web communities. The MIT-licensed repository gained rapid popularity, accumulating more than 500 GitHub stars and 2,700 likes on X shortly after launch.

The workflow is powered by Claude Managed Agents running on the Sonnet model, with each daily generation costing approximately $0.75. This operational footprint highlights Anthropic's monthly credit allocations available to Claude tier subscribers, which include $100 in API credits on the Max 5x tier and $200 on the Max 20x tier. These credits offset expenses across the API, Agent SDK, and Managed Agents infrastructure, though they do not apply to interactive Claude Code execution.

To build the personalized homepage, the application executes a structured five-stage pipeline. It collects browsing history, analyzes recurring topics and site usage, generates fresh layout code, verifies script safety within a sandboxed environment, and finally displays the updated artifact when a user opens a tab.

For AI engineers and software practitioners, the project serves as a practical template for personal automation. By relying on Claude Managed Agents to handle model orchestration, sandboxing, recovery, credential safety, and tracing, developers avoid writing complex backend infrastructure from scratch. The easily forkable repository demonstrates how to build long-running, customized agentic workflows backed by existing subscription credits.
