OpenAI Floods Mathematics Field With 700 Papers

OpenAI has published hundreds of AI-generated mathematical manuscripts, shocking academics by solving long-standing conjectures while overwhelming the discipline with unverified proofs.

OpenAI recently released nearly 400 AI-generated mathematical results spread across 719 manuscripts, leaving researchers scrambling to digest a sprawling repository with a 40-page table of contents. To generate these outputs, an internal frontier model attempted more than 4,000 problems, expending roughly 3 hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking compute per typical result. The work spans diverse fields including combinatorics, multiple branches of geometry, number theory, theoretical computer science, algebra, topology, probability, statistical mechanics, and mathematical physics.

Despite impressive claims—including progress on the Riemann hypothesis, a special case of the Hodge conjecture, and a solution to the four-dimensional Kakeya conjecture—academics face an exhausting verification process. OpenAI acknowledged that only 300 top-line results, representing around 42 percent of the manuscripts, have been formally code-verified using the Lean proof assistant. The reliability of unverified papers remains suspect; by October 8th, OpenAI's public release history already recorded revisions on more than a dozen manuscripts and the complete removal of 3 papers after a sign error invalidated their central proof.

This deluge creates severe operational shifts for human mathematicians. Multiple scholars report that grant proposals and entire research trajectories were upended overnight as automated systems targeted well-known problems, such as Yang-Mills theory and its unresolved mass gap problem. Although OpenAI engaged with the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence and pledged to fund community workshops, practitioners fear that sorting valid breakthroughs from low-quality AI output will siphon years of academic labor and destabilize university faculties.
