The robotics startup Generalist has secured nearly $200 million in fresh capital, pushing its valuation to $3 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter. Led by venture firm 8VC, this new funding serves as an extension of a $400 million Series B round that was announced in June at a $2 billion valuation. The extension brings the total Series B funding to $600 million, highlighting intense investor interest in physical artificial intelligence.

Founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, alongside former Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry, Generalist has quickly attracted high-profile backing. Early investors include Nvidia, Union Square Ventures, Bezos Expeditions, Radical Ventures, and prominent AI researcher Fei-Fei Li. The startup is developing an AI foundation model designed to serve as a universal brain for various types of hardware. Its latest release, the Gen 1.5 model, reportedly allows robots to learn new tasks by watching video demonstrations lasting only 3 to 12 seconds.

For robotics practitioners, Generalist's technology represents a shift toward highly adaptable automation. Instead of programming robots with rigid, task-specific code, developers can use the Gen 1.5 model to quickly teach machines new behaviors through brief visual examples. The startup is currently collaborating with a select group of customers to refine the model for specific real-world applications. This approach could significantly lower the barrier to deploying robots in dynamic environments like warehouses and factories.

The massive funding round places Generalist among an elite group of heavily capitalized robotics AI startups. Competitors include Physical Intelligence, which is valued at $11 billion, and the SoftBank-backed Skild AI, valued at $14 billion. Another rival, Genesis AI, was recently in discussions to raise capital at a similar $3 billion valuation. While some venture capitalists caution that a truly generalized robotics model remains years away due to the scarcity of physical training data compared to text, these valuations show a massive bet on achieving a breakthrough.
