Anthropic pledges $200 million for AI economic research

Anthropic has committed $200 million to the Anthropic Economic Futures Research Fund to support ambitious external research on mitigating the economic disruptions of artificial intelligence. This initiative represents a major scaling up of the company's Economic Futures program, which launched one year ago. Moving away from managing numerous small grants, Anthropic will now focus on funding large-scale randomized control trials and creative pilot programs. The company plans to award grants primarily in the $5 million to $30 million range, with a strict minimum funding threshold of $1 million. Eligible applicants include accredited universities, independent research institutes, policy organizations, and experienced nonprofits.

The fund aims to generate empirical evidence to support the Economic Policy Framework that Anthropic published in June. Research will target five priority areas: shaping AI's workplace impact, helping workers navigate career transitions, modernizing income support for displaced employees, building worker equity in AI growth, and evaluating public investments. For researchers and policymakers, this funding provides a rare opportunity to test unconventional economic interventions, such as universal pre-distributive capital accounts, wage insurance, and guaranteed-jobs pilots, before widespread labor displacement occurs. Anthropic is also launching a separate $5 million grant program to study how AI affects user wellbeing.

Alongside these funding announcements, Anthropic updated its Claude Fable 5 model. The company modified the model's biology safeguards to significantly decrease false positives. As a result, Claude Fable 5 users will experience fewer fallbacks, which previously forced the system to default to a weaker model when handling biological queries. For developers and researchers utilizing Claude Fable 5, this update ensures more reliable performance and fewer workflow interruptions during scientific inquiries, while the broader economic fund promises to deliver actionable data to help organizations navigate the coming labor transition.
